General Education

If you have general, special or technical transfer credit for a course that you want to be considered for a General Education requirement, you have two options available: evaluating your courses through the College of Engineering review, or evaluating the courses individually by each course department at Ohio State.

Evaluation by the College of Engineering

Since General Education coursework spans a wide variety of departments, students can submit all general, special, or technical credit courses for consideration to fulfill General Education requirements through their engineering academic advisor, regardless of department. Please follow the process below to submit your coursework for consideration:

  • Review the information on General Education requirements and categories.
  • Run a Transfer Credit Report and review your credit. Identify any courses transferred to OSU as General (G000.XX), Technical (T000.XX) or Special (S000.XX) credit which appear to fall into a General Education category you have not currently completed. (If you are submitting a course for pre-evaluation, you can skip this step.)
  • Discuss the content of each course with your academic advisors to determine if the course is a worthwhile submission for a General Education requirement.
  • If it is, submit the following course materials to your academic advisor:
    • Course description, and
    • Course syllabus, including a list of textbooks and a list of topics covered.
  • Your academic advisor will submit the documentation to the College Office for review. You will receive the result of your petition via email.
  • Something to Keep in Mind:
    • This evaluation option does not change the course to an OSU equivalent. The credit will remain as it is currently posted on your Transfer Credit Report (e.g. History G000.01). However, if approved, the course will be applied to the corresponding General Education category in your Degree Audit and will fulfill that requirement for your engineering degree.

Evaluation by the Course Department

Students also have the option to submit general, special, or technical credit for evaluation to the individual course departments.

  • In order for transfer credit to fulfill a General Education category, the individual course must transfer to Ohio State as 2 or more semester credit hours. Multiple courses cannot be combined together to meet this minimum hour requirement.
  • Collect the following course materials:
    • Course description, and
    • Course syllabus, including a list of textbooks and a list of topics covered.
  • Submit the course materials and a copy of your Transfer Credit Report (if you have already completed the course) to the Transfer Credit Coordinator listed for the corresponding course department.
  • The Transfer Credit Coordinator will review your course materials and determine if there is an OSU equivalent course. If there is, your transfer credit will be updated to reflect this equivalent OSU course. If there is not an equivalent, but the Transfer Credit Coordinator verifies that the course has met the spirit of a specific General Education category, forward this message to your academic advisor and he/she can submit it via the process above on your behalf.
